The Renewable Energy Research Institute of UCLM participates in Boston in the International Electrotechnical Commission

Professor at the University of Castilla-La Mancha (UCLM) and director of the Renewable Energy Research Institute (IER), Emilio Gómez Lázaro, participated in Boston (USA) as the head of the Spanish delegation at the TC88 committee meeting of the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC). Gómez Lázaro chairs the CTN 221 committee 'Wind Energy Generation Systems,' which has 160 members representing more than 30 entities and companies, including the main wind energy stakeholders in Spain, within the framework of UNE.

The meeting, held on April 3 and 4, featured the scientific and technical contributions of three projects by researchers from the Renewable Energy Research Institute's "Grid Energy Integration" section and the Renewable Energy Research Group of UCLM.

The first project, titled "New Coordinated Services for Wind and Solar Resources: Modeling and Development of Hybrid Solutions in an Energy Transition Environment for Future Electrical Systems" (RESinGrid, PID2021-126082OB-C21), is funded by MCIN/AEI/10.13039/501100011033/ and FEDER funds. The second project, "Addressing Challenges in Future Grids: Promoting Renewable Energies as Dynamic Participants in Electrical Systems" (SBPLY/23/180225/000226), is funded by the regional government and FEDER funds. Finally, the third project, of European scope, "Intelligent Systems for Autonomous Wind Power Plant Operations" (101168725), recently started, studies how to improve the operation and maintenance of wind assets using artificial intelligence techniques and other methodologies. This project has a budget of over four million euros and is carried out in collaboration with the most important universities and companies in the wind energy sector in Europe.

The three projects involve national and international researchers, with defined objectives and tasks that contribute to some standards and working groups of the TC 88 of IEC.

The secretariat in Spain of the CTN 221 committee is held by the Spanish Wind Energy Association (AEE), which has more than 350 associated companies and represents over 90% of the sector in Spain. It includes promoters, manufacturers of wind turbines and components, national and regional associations, organizations linked to the sector, lawyers, and financial and insurance entities, among others. The main objective of AEE is to promote the growth of wind energy through its interests, research, communication, and education.

The TC88 committee, with representation from 33 countries and ten observers, has developed nearly 50 standards, which are later adopted as national standards. The function of the TC88 committee is global standardization activity, developing standards based on and in agreement with IEC and ISO (International Organization for Standardization) standards. It is the fourth committee dedicated to renewable energies, being the main one in terms of the number of experts with a total of 1079.

From the Renewable Energy Research Institute of UCLM, participation in the definition and development of international standards in the field of renewable technologies and the integration of generated electrical energy into energy systems is considered strategic, thus participating in the committees that are developing the standards for the future of these technologies, a fundamental aspect as they mature.

"The importance of wind energy worldwide is therefore reflected in the importance of standardization in the sector globally. Spain, as one of the world's leading countries, ranks as the fourth country in the number of experts participating in TC88," after Germany (215), Denmark (159), and China (137)," says the director of IER.

A fundamental aspect of carrying out the energy transition is the need for engineers trained in these types of technologies, whose foundations are currently being developed, as indicated by the IER. Thus, UCLM offers the Dual University Master's Degree in Renewable Energies (MUER), pioneering at the national level in relation to its dual training path in companies.
